BACKGROUND
As the earlier Index to New South Wales convict indents microfiche contains
an incomplete index to all arrivals, particularly between 1801 and 1842,
the Genealogical Society of Victoria undertook, with the agreement of the
State Records Authority of New South Wales, to compile a complete index.
Because the 1788 - 1800 period in the first Convict Index (1986) did not
show a ship for all of the first three fleet arrivals and there were some
anomalies for the remaining period it was at first decided to produce a
supplementary Index to the original. Due to several complexities and
omissions found when work began it became apparent that a new Index to the
Convict Arrivals to New South Wales 1788 - 1842 would have to be made.
Accordingly all the source documents were reprocessed to produce a
completely new index; those entries that lacked the ship were researched to
find the relevant transport's name and those convicts not included in the
first index have been added. In all, this new index contains many thousands
of names and aliases not included in the first index.
THE NEW INDEXES
The major index of more than 124,000 entries is of the names and aliases of
the convicts who arrived in New South Wales and some in Van Diemen's Land
between 1788 and 1842. It is intended to complement the microfiche of
convict indentures (Indents) which have been produced by the State Records
Authority of New South Wales as part of their Genealogical Research Kit.
Finding the name of an ancestor in this index will enable a researcher to
go on to find other sources which will reveal details about the convict.
The second index is of the ships recorded on the same documents - those
ships that transported the convicts. This is intended especially as an aid
for researchers with a wider interest than following the one convict.
