For deaths in Geelong the abbreviation GLONG is often used for the death
place, This abbreviation appears occasionally from 1921. During some years
in the 1940s and 1950s this seems to be the only way Geelong deaths are
identified for surnames with some initial letters. For some initials both
GLONG and GEELONG are used while for others there seems to be only GEELONG.
I also found a few with GLG. Could this be another variation. For later
years the four letter abbreviation GEEL seems to be used extensively.

"GLONG or GEEL" used to search for Geelong deaths seems to find all
including Geelong and variations of Geelong West.

Using G followed by an asterisk should find all Geelong entries. These will
be the majority of the entries found. Other abbreviations of interest found
using this method are GBORO, GBOROUGH, GHUNTLY and several others. I
suggest this method may help to find strange abbreviations for other places
if you do not find entries using the full name.
