Thanks to Mike, Judy and Peter I now have a better idea of what
the medal card says. When I checked it again I could see that
what followed the 392/ was indeed Roman numerals - XVI.

I appreciate all the answers received.

| The SWB refers to the Silver War Badge which was awarded to
soldiers
| who were invalided out of the army after illness or a wound.
It was awarded from September 1916 onwards.

| The 392 code refers to King's Regulation 392 which governed the
discharge of men from the British Army. The 392 code is normally
followed by a code in Roman numerals which specifies the reason
for discharge.

| The medal rolls for the SWB are held at the National Archives
at Kew
| and may contain further informtion regarding the reason for
discharge.
