Hello again Barbara,
The SWDITGW CD shows the following information about your Grandfather:
22324 Private William Oswald Storey, 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry.
Born, Lanchester, Co Durham
Enlisted. Newcastle
Residence. Durham
Died Date. 21/04/16
Died How, Killed in Action.
Theatre of War. France and Flanders.
For information I also had a look at other deaths during the dates you
mention;
a) There were a total of 4 deaths from the 2nd Battalion on the 21st April
1916. Your Grandfather plus 3 others.
b) Between the dates 19th - 30th April 1916 there were a total of 28 deaths
from the 2nd Battalion.
You ask what action he might have been likely to killed in. Well I hope some
other lister with more detailed information may come to help here. But from
what I understand it was a [fairly quiet] time. It was the run up to the
Battle of the Somme {1st July]. There were of course actions going on all
the time:
The Hohenzollern Redoubt. 2nd - 18th March
Actions of St Eloi Craters. 27th March - 16th April
German Gas Attacks on the Hulluch Front. 27th and 29th April [ though your
grandfather was dead by this date].
He may of course just sadly been a victim of daily life in the front line
areas. Snipers, shell fire, trench raids et al, as a figure of only 28
deaths from the Battalion over a 11 day period [19-30th April] is very low
indeed and might suggest that it was not involved directly in any actions.
Regards
Peter Fellowes

Cemetery [which I was lucky enough to visit last October]. I have two
questions that I hope someone will be able to help with -

death certificate tell me more than the details on CWGC site.

There were 87 men killed and buried at Essex Farm between 19th and 30th
April 1916 - quite a large proportion of the 1100 buried there.
