Hello
You do not mention type of ship - presuming it was a troop ship, it could
have been torpedoed. If it was in 1915, the men would have been on the way
to Gallipoli.
For example - 29th Division - left Avonmouth on ships Anson and Alaunia.
Submarine alert on the way. Ships would be sent to Alexandria, in Egypt or
Mudros Harbour on Lemnos.
When the men on the ships realised what they were in for, they may have
thought that being torpedoed gave them a greater chance of survival !.
As an aside the 29th Div won 12 VC's at Gallipoli. One of the best
Divisions, full of regular soldiers was decimated.
