The GRO Index to war deaths for the Army during the period 1914-1921
is now online and searchable at:
http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/
There are, of course, a lot of Smiths, but if you know his service
number it will be very straightforward. If not, you may have to take
a chance between several. You should get an age, but not a date of
birth. Certificates can be ordered in the usual ways, but on a
slightly different form as the references do not follow the normal
pattern of 'quarters.'
