Good evening people ...
The very first troops to leave Australian soil departed from King George Sound at Albany (down the bottom of WA) ... this was the last glimpse of Australian soil for many soldiers ... (they are remembered in Western Australia very well ... twice a year in fact) at the top of Mt Clarence in Albany looking right out over King George Sound is a replica of the Port Said monument ... the original was destroyed in the Suez crisis ... the remains were shipped to Albany and the magnificent monument was built again. Leading up to the monument is Albany's Avenue of Honour ... an avenue of tree's planted to honour our state's fallen. (We have a similar one leading up to our monument in Kings Park Perth). Our navy's ANZAC has just departed from Albany on an historic voyage to anchor of the coast of Gallipoli to take part in this years celebrations which has seen something like 15,000 Australian's embark on their own pilgrimage to take part in this years ANZAC celebrations.
2014 will mark the 100 year celebrations and as a mark of honour, respect and appreciation of the dedication and commitment our defence personnel gave in WWI I am publishing a biographical index of all those who were born in Albany and enlisted and all those who enlisted in Albany. This database at present sits at 600 many having come to Albany from the UK, NZ and Scotland which is rather interesting on its own. At the same time I am putting together a data base of defence personnel in all other arenas which will be given to the Albany RSL. I would be interested to make contact with any family members who would like to contribute to the biographical index.
Having said all that ... I have just produced a CD complete with photographs of the plaques lining the Avenue of Honour and the various monuments at Mt Clarence, anyone interested in this CD please contact me off list.
Bright Blessings
Sandra
