Hi Steve

The brother-in-laws were called Thomas and William Cottam. I can trace them
through various census records.

I am up against a complete brick wall for Alfred's family, but based on the
fact that their father was called James, I will guess that the brother is
called James Smith.

All of the above were brought-up in the St George in the East area of
London.

Thanks

Chris

Hello Christopher
Soldiers Died in the Great War book has-
17th (County of London) Battalion (Poplar and Stepney Rifles)
SMITH, Alfred James, enlisted - Bow, 572148, Rfn, d of w, F & F, 15/12/17.

If you let me have his brother and Brother in laws names, I will check the
Soldiers Died for them.
The London Regiment is a nightmare because they had so many Battalions.
Hopefully an expert on them may be of help.
Even the 17th had a 1/17th and a 2/17th but the 2/17th were I believe in
Italy until 1918.
1/17th were part of 141st Brigade, 47th Division.
47th Div took part in the Cambrai Operations 20th November to 7th December
1917.. The German Counter attacks 30th November to 3rd December is probably
were he was gassed.
47th Div part of V Corps , Third Army. V Corps relieved IV Corps on 1st
December, 1917 taking over the 2nd, 47th and 59th Divisions in the line.
If you look on www.1914-1918.net
you may be able to work out which 2nd and 22nd Battalion of the London
Regiment he was in.
My website www.ypressalient.co.uk does have some links to other websites
that may help.
