Hi
Can any-one shed some light on the regiments detailed below and give me some
clues with regard to the movements of the regiments involved.
From WW1 medal card of my Great Grandfather, we can see that he served in at
least two regiments.
Corps Rank Regt. No.
22-Lond. R Pte 683598
R. Fus. 245093
2-Lond. R. -do-
He died in the one of field hospital near to Etaples from Mustard Gas
poisoning, see below:
Name: SMITH, ALFRED JAMES
Initials: A J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Rifleman
Regiment: London Regiment
Unit Text: 17th Bn.
Date of Death: 15/12/1917
Service No: 572148
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: XXXI. D. 21.
Cemetery: ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY
We believe that initially he served with his brother and his two
brother-in-laws (all of whom were killed/mortally wounded in 1916) in one of
the London Rifle Regiments.
Though he was invalided out in around 1916, he re-enlisted and joined the
17th London regiment (Poplar and Stepney Rilfes), serving again in France.
Looking forward to hearing from you
