With British WW1 period military pension records there's bad news and good
news, but first of all you must understand that the surviving Ministry of
Pensions records are nothing to do with the surviving service records - they
are entirely different record classes.

Firstly, only about 2% of the MoP records for servicemen's pensions and
about 8% relating to widow's pensions relating to WW1 service were retained.
That's the bad news.

On the positive side the initial searches are very easy to make. Go to >
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.asp
and go into "search the catalogue".
In the "word or phrase" box enter the serviceman's / woman's surname
(nothing else).
In the department or series code box enter the letters PIN (no spaces or
punctuation).
Click on search and any files in the various MoP record classes which match
your surname will be shown.

At this point it stops being "easy" because the (limited) info which you see
on screen is as much as you can get without physically examining the file(s)
at TNA Kew, but at least you can get an idea as to whether a MoP file could
exist, and knowing the file refs in advance greatly reduces the search time.

Obviously this works better if you are looking for someone with a surname
like Boilerbuilder rather than a Smith or Jones - but you have to persevere
because these (and the surviving WO363 / 364 service records) are the only
centrally held official records which are available.
