Samantha - see "Stenographische Berichte uber die offentlichen Verhandlungen
des Untersuchungsausschusses der verfassunggebenden deutschen
Nationalversammlung" - notes on the Potsdam Conference of 5-6th July 1914 -
and much other contemporary and near contemporary material of "German"
origin..
On the other hand (!) - if the complicated explanation is to be avoided -
events at Sarajevo are really a red herring - it was the Kaiser and the
likes of von Falkenhayn who had long-since been spoiling for an expansionist
war and the events involving their allies the Austrians merely provided a
useful "excuse" to kick things off. On their own the Austrians were no match
for the French / Russian / British pact or in reality any component part of
it, - it was the Germans who were the key players amongst the central
powers, and their "Schlieffen Plan" for a quick defeat of the French before
anybody else of any consequence could become (seriously) involved in the
European theatre placed very little reliance upon input from their allies.
Essentially, the Germans started it so they are to blame. (Also, we won so
we get to write the history).

tend to focus on the Germans as if they were the only ones to blame?
