The Sisters of the Good Shepherd have been called a few other things over
the centuries. ...Refuge and Charity were in their names at one time.
They have both Active and Contemplative members.
Contemplatives are considered cloistered Nuns and rarely if ever leave their
convents/monasteries.
Over the centuries there have been many changes not only in the work the
sisters do but in their own "divisions" and lifestyle.
At one time they had girls/young women who were called Penitents. They
could never enter religious life.
But those of you who are looking for family or wanting to learn what their
lives were about need not concern yourself with that data though it is
fascinating.
Based on what you have told us, I am thinking your pictures will show your
cousin wearing a habit that closely resembles that worn by a Discalced
(Cloistered Carmelite). They all wear the same thing now with a few
exceptions.
I would love to see pictures of your cousin. Would you send some to me?
Thank You
Elizabeth V. Cardinal
