Subject: [GOOD-SHEPHERD-HOMES] Homes in England, 1900

Hi
I have recently discovered that my great grandmother was in a home of the good shepherd in 1901 with a 5 month old son, at 4 Princes Street, Dover, Kent, England.
The address seems to still have been a private residence in 1891, and I don't know about 1911 yet as the census won't be available for another 6 years, and I can't find any other references to it.
To my knowledge he wasn't actually born there, but in a private home - where I think she was a domestic servant. However, the son didn't stay with her - but did keep her (maiden) name until he died in 1950.
By browsing the archive I think I may have answered some of my questions, but anyway, some clarification if possible would be great.
1) I am assuming that this would have been a home connected to the Sisters of the Good Shepherd
2) I am assuming that there would have been no option but to give up the child (father un-named)
3) Would he have stayed within the good-home organisation i.e. foster home / schooling?
I'm finding it hard to get concrete information, but an idea of what would generally have happened...
thanks
Ellen
