Elizabeth and all,

Although the order began in France I am not sure when they came to the US.
I would assume it was around the turn of the century. Strange I can't
remember every dwelling much on the history of the order in the United
Stated. I don't believe they ever cared for infants, as the founder or the
order St. Mary Euphrasia formed the community specifically for "wayward"
girls. They did have homes in the US for unmarried pregnant girls but I'm
sure the children were given up for adoption. There were also convents in
the mid-west as well as west. I don't know if they still exist there
although a few years ago I remember seeing something on the web about their
work in the mid-west. As soon as I get a chance I am going to see if I can
get one of my convent friends to join us on this list. She was in much
longer than myself and being a social worker was more involved in certain
areas of the work. I will e-mail her over the week-end.

Audrey (a former GS nun)
