Subject: [GEORGE-L] George in Philadelphia/Burlington, NJ
Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 21:37:03 EDT
Hello all,
I saw a couple posts referencing George's in Philadelphia so thought I'd post
what little I know of mine to see if any of you see a connection. Would love
to exchange information with anyone who does! Most of the info below comes
from a family bible and some Phila. city directories... I haven't explored
this side of the family in too much depth yet.
They supposedly were in Philadelphia first, then moved to Burlington, NJ,
sometime around 1900. Some of the men were toolmakers.
My g-g-grandfather was James S. GEORGE, b. ?, d. 8-15-1929, location unknown,
wife unknown, siblings unknown.
His son was John W. George, b. 4-12-1868, d. 2-11-1933, married to Mabel E.
GAMBLE, and they had 11 children, most of whom died before they reached the
age of 20. Some may have been born in Phila, some were definitely born in
Burlington:
James S. George b. 8-25-1891, d. 12-1-1911
Robert G. George b. 3-3-1894, d. ?, married Genevieve DOYLE
Rebecca M. George b. 1-1-1896, d. 198?, married Earl GARDINER
Sarah A. George b. 10-3-1898, d. 7-13-1913
John W. George b. 1-5-1900, d. 6-1959?, married Elizabeth LAWRENCE
Harry G. George b. 5-20-1902, d. 2-23-1919
William George b. 5-5-1906, d. 9-6-1906
Elizabeth Kemley George b. 2-9-1908, d. 8-18-1988 (my grandmother), married
Walter Elmer KNOTT
Mabel H. George b. 10-30-1910, d. ?, married James RUDDEROW
Mark A. George b. 1-21-1915, d. 8-7-1929
I believe the George's who were in Philadelphia were the following people
that I found in the city directory:
1880 Phila. City Directory
James George, machinist 2007 Evergreen
William George, draughtsman 1037 Buttonwood
1890
James S. George, machinist 1434 S. 19th St.
James S., Jr., machinist 1434 S. 19th St.
1895
James S., sup't S. 20th, c. Washington Ave.
John, machinist, 1432 S. 19th St.
Sarah, widow of William, 1432 S. 19th St.
1900
James S., machinist 1434 S. 19th St.
James S. Jr., machinist 2046 S. 18th St.
John W., machinist 1432 S. 19th St.
Again, I'd be happy to exchange info with anyone who sees a connection.
Holly Knott
