Subject: [GEORGE-L] Georges of Pendleton & Hardy/Grant area of VA / WV
Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 14:10:22 -0600 (MDT)
Dear George Cousins,
Does anyone have any information on any of the Georges that lived near the
border of Hardy VA later became Grant WV and Pendleton Va/WV area from about
1790-1890?
I feel confidant that they are all related and am trying to fit them
together, any pieces of the puzzle you may have would be appreciated--
If anyone would like to read further my connections and family data are:
This family was found on the 1850/1860 Hardy Census:
James GEORGE Jr. b abt 1825-27, 25 age 1850, 33 age 1860
Elizabeth b. abt 1822, 28 age 1850 died before 1860
Phoebe Wolford b. abt 1829, 31 age 1860, md 8 mar 1860
Sofronia b. abt 1846, 4 age 1850, 14 age 1860 (my gggmother)
Jacob b. abt 1848, 2 age 1850, 12 age 1860
Gabriel (Wolford) b. abt 1850, 10 age 1860
Mary b. abt 1853, 7 age 1860
Christian b. abt 1854, 6 age 1860
I made the mistake of attaching the above James to the following James
because they were listed on the 1850 Census as Jr and Sr and were listed as
next door neighbors so I made the unpardonable mistake of assuming they were
father and son. I have since learned that Jr/Sr did not mean father and
son. There fore I have to find James real father. I am now thinking that
Sr was probably Jr's uncle.
James George Sr. b abt 1785, 65 age 1850
Margaret b. abt 1796, 54 age 1850
John b. abt 1820, 30 age 1850
Margaret b. abt 1830, 20 age 1850
Mary b. abt 1834, 16 age 1850
Enos b. abt 1837, 13 age 1850
William b. abt 1839, 11 age 1850
Margaret George died 1 feb 1872, father Engles
James George md Peggy Engle dec 19, 1817
The assumption can be made that James Sr's wife is Margaret Engle, but I'm
rather leary about making assumptions, so am still looking for
confirmation-such as burial plots with the death date of Margaret next to
James with similiar birth year.
I have found this family on LDS-ANF (names and dates are unverified by me)
that could be the family of James Jr.:
William C. GEORGE b. 1796 , VA; d. Apr 1875, McLean county IL; md. 1816
Hampshire VA
Mary A. Hawkins b. abt 1798, VA; d. 1854, Champaign county IL
Samuel b. abt 1818, Hampshire, VA
John b. abt 1820, Hampshire VA; d. 1854; md Mary Ann BOHANAN, 1 jun 1883
Thomas b. abt 1822, Pendleton, VA; md. Betts COLLINS
James b. 24 mar 1824, Pendleton Va; md Elizabeth BENNETT
Catherine b. abt 1826, Pendleton VA; md SIMONS
Elsie b. abt 1828, Hampshire, VA; md Elijah WHITE
Mary b. abt 1830, Hampshire VA; William BROWN
Sarah b. abt 1832, Hampshire VA; Silas SMITH
Ann Rebecca b. abt 1834, Wheeling, Ohio, VA; md Wm EMMETT
Isaac b. 14 sep 1836, Wheeling, Ohio, Va; d. 5 jan 1917 Deering, McHenry,
ND; md. Catherine COOK, 21 feb 1864, Bloomington, McLean, IL
William b. abt 1836, Wheeling, Ohio, Va;
Abraham b. 14 sep 1836, Wheeling, Ohio, Va; md Miss GORHAM
and this family on LDS ANF (also unverified) that could be the family of
James SR and William
C. making James Sr the uncle of James Jr.:
Reuben GEORGE b. 25 Nov 1749, Caroline, Culpepper, VA; d. 16 Jan 1832,
Pendleton VA; md 27 dec 1780
Elsey FRAZEY b. 1755, Stony Hill, NJ; d. 27 Jul 1821
Samuel b. 12 oct 1782, Stony Hill, NJ; d. 15 feb 1783 Stony Hill, NJ
John b. 21 Jun 1784, Stony Hill, NJ
James b. 30 nov 1787, Augusta, VA
Henry Sr b. 25 nov 1790, Pendleton VA; d. 19 jul 1882; md. Mary Elizabeth
MURPHY
Sarah b. 21 jul 1794, Pendleton VA; md. Solomon INGLE, 24 jun 1823
Pendleton, VA
William b. 20 feb 1798, Pendleton VA
According to my research Reuben GEORGE was a Rev. War Pensioner and
according to his Last Pension Payment, the children above with the exception
of Samuel, were mentioned .
This is all that I have on the GEORGE family of Pendleton, Hardy/Grant
counties. I am trying to piece together all of the George families that
lived in the Pendleton, Hardy/Grant area since they probably all descended
from Reuben GEORGE which I have not proved yet, but is probably my 5ggf .
I have some references from E.L. Judy's book on History of Grant and Hardy
county. I think they came in 1790 and very few were left by 1890, they
went to IL
or Kansas. My gggm married in Green county OH and returned to raise her
family in WV, I've still not found where her family moved to.
If you find a connection, I would love to hear from you,
Elaine
Brady
