And EFFIE is something one can spell without looking it up!

More to the point, perhaps, is that if the woman's name were actually
Frances Elizabeth, and someone wrote (or even said) her name as F. E.
... you'd end up spelling it Effie. If the ancestry was from VA or WV,
Frances Elizabeth is a rather common combination in the century around
the Revolution. And, of course -- if someone got the name off the
1850,
1860, or 1870 census COPY, where most of the names were initials,
you're
back to F. E. and the government said so in writing. ;-)
