I too am interested in this, as my maternal grandfather's family were
all from this area, from the Brock's Gap area of Rockingham County.
Most of them were German or Swiss: Hoover/Huber, Roadcap/Rothgeb, Lamb,
etc., as well as the Van Pelts who came down from New Amsterdam, and the
Cherryholmes, of British origin.

There were several very good old classics on this that I used back in
the days before the Internet, when I had many enjoyable times
researching in this beautiful area. Let me see if I can find some titles.
OK, these are a good place to start:
A History of Rockingham County, Virginia (1912)
A History of Shenandoah County, Virginia
The German Element of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia (1907)
Virginia Valley Records: Genealogical and Historical Materials of
Rockingham County, Virginia and Related Regions
Twenty-Five Chapters on the Shenandoah Valley, to Which is Appended a
Concise History of the Civil War in the Valley
.....All by John W. Wayland. He wrote some 30 historical books on the
Shenandoah Valley.
And our M. Bowman should be particularly interested in:
The Bowmans: A Pioneering Family in Virginia, Kentucky and the
Northwest Territory
All these and other books by Wayland can be found on Abebooks.com.
There are undoubtedly books on the region's history by others that are
also valuable, but these are a fundamental resource for those who want
to get to know the history of that area and its people.
Enjoy!
Oh yes -- I have a Hoover surname project, in which our Hoovers from
Brock's Gap are represented -- this is an E3b lineage; but the other
large Rockingham Co. Hoover clan from Timberville has not yet been
tested, and this is a great wish of mine, to see if we are related or
not. Both have traditions of coming from the Hubers of Lancaster Co., PA.
I would be very glad to be in touch with any other DNA projects that are
focused on families from this area; many of them were intermarried,
especially in Brock's Gap.
