"Ethnoancestry is pleased to announce the launch of a new SNP within the
R1b group. M222 has been found to date in the Irish STR-defined subgroup of
R1b, which includes the recently described Ui Neill type."
Dr. James F. Wilson, who was the first to identify the "AMH" or Atlantic Modal Haplotype has succeeded in finding the Y-SNP associated with the famous Irish Ui Neill of the Nine Hostages lineage. This prototypic Irish signature has been the subject of numerous discussions in public forums, particularly subsequent to the publication of "A Y-Chromosome Signature of Hegemony in Gaelic Ireland" in a recent edition of the American Journal of Human Genetics by Moore et al. This is, according to Moore, "the most important and enduring dynasty of early medieval Ireland" and has a large number of surnames associated with this lineage.
It should also be noted that we do not yet have evidence of how deep the SNP is. It has seen very limited tested on the Continent. However few researchers have used this marker. One reason is that it was associated with infertility in a study published at the time Ethnoancestry was creating its R1b Subgroup test, which is to date the only subgroup test for M269 R1b with the exception of a subset of these markers in the Marligen test also sold by Ethnoancestry.
It remains to be seen whether it is restricted to the Ui Neill lineage or more widely dispersed within the Q-Celt and P-Celt (Gaelic) speaking world. It could have its origins elsewhere in for example Iberia or Gaul (France). It is simply too early to tell. Those who are S21, S28 and SRY2627 tested negative for M222. It is clearly a sister clade to the others.
Ethnoancestry wishes to thank Gareth Henson and David Wilson for their advocating for M222 by bringing forward new studies which clearly indicated that the initial research differentially linking M222 with infertility cannot be replicated. They also predicted that M222 would be seen in Ireland. It was their persistence which resulted in the development of this marker which will be available from Ethonoancestry as soon as tomorrow.
