According Hanks and Hodges DICITIONARY OF SURNAMES, PG. 576 Wilde is
a variation of the English surname Wild, which signifies a violent man,
or a man who lives in an uncultivated area. Other English variants are
Whild(e) Wyld(e)
German versions are Wild(t) Wilde(r) Wildemann
Dutch and Flemish De Wildt (de) Wilde
Oscar Wilde, though born in Dublin, was descended from a family which
came from Walsingham near Durham.
