Subject: DNA Heritage and DYS462 for I1a Folks

It just occured to me that folks who obtained their Y-DNA haplotype results from DNAHeritage could learn about their DYS462 result relatively inexpensively --- if they don't already know this value. It has already been measured and is instantly available to you for a modest fee. If you are I1a there is good reason to do so. DYS462 is a Very slowly mutating marker; perhaps it mutates once or twice in the history of an entire modern human line out of Africa. Fortunately, among I1a folks it apparently mutated right in the middle of I1a's spreading out in Europe --- dividing that haplogroup into folks with "12" and others with "13" at this marker.

See http://worldfamilies.net and then Y Haplogroups section, I1a Haplogroup for more discussion.

If you have DYS455 = 8 the probability is very high you are I1a. In that case, if your original results came from DNAHeritage I would encourage you to learn of your DYS462 result and communicate it to me for this study of the I1a spreading throughout Europe. The cost will be just a few dollars but the contribution to our increasing knowledge of the geographical details of I1a Haplogroup could be significant.

The reason I suspect that many customers of DNAHeritage know whether or not they are I1a but don't have their DYS462 value is that I did some digging at the Ybase website database last night, and many folks only obtained results which did not include DYS462. But that knowledge is available!
