Re. Your comments about the odds of random matches.

The letters for the various haplogroups are assigned based on just the
basic mtDNA test, the HVR1 test. So your comments about J and U-2 are
only relevant for the HVR1 test. So if the people are only tested for
HVR1, the basic mtDNA test, then I agree with you that the chance of
random matches is very high.

But, I do believe that if two people have been tested for HVR1 and HVR2,
the enhanced high resolution test, as is done with the mtDNA Plus test,
and that these two people then still match, that the odds of a random
match drop dramatically.

Possibly Max or Bennett with FamilyTreeDNA (or others) can comment more
on this.
