I imagine you are almost certainly right, Eve.
There seems to be a great deal of misunderstanding about this whole
business. The situation is that there are TWO quite separate
organisations both claiming the right to use the name Burke's Peerage.
The well-known and longstanding genealogical directory of that name
which with we are all familiar is NOT published by H Brooks-Baker. It
is published by a quite different publishing outfit.
However, HBB claims ownership of the title and rest of the business,
which publishes other books under the Burke's Peerage imprint and also
runs the website. There was legal hassle over this some years ago.
Do not confuse the two, though it's easily done. HBB uses the kudos
associated with the Burke's Peerage title to promote his business, but
in fact he does not publish the book of the name, the rights to which
are owned by another company. I am sure those of us who have been
around a long time will remember the Halbert's/Burke's Peerage "World
Book of....." (fill in any old surname you like) scam and treat this
latest information accordingly.
