You're right Sue, it does vary from county to county, but it also varies from shop to shop. So you can imagine our surprise when Rock and I stopped in at a Mexican restaurant one day while in Sedona, Arizona, and had their fish and french fries...'a special all-you-can eat' every friday. It was wonderful! There's also a restaurant here in Honolulu called Bubba Gumps which has very good fish and chips. However, for those days where it's not quite up to standard...here's a purge from the 1700's...:-)

"Take half an ounce of fena, boil it in a pint of ale till half be confumed; cover it clofe till the next day; then boil it again till it comes to two fpoonfuls; ftrain it, and add to it two fpoonfuls of treacle, and drink it warm; drink gruel, or poffet, or broth after it; keep yourfelf very warm while it is working; or elfe two ounces of fyrup of rofes, and drink warm ale after it in the working."

Andy & I took MIL to "Harry Ramsdens" on Friday evening .... It was
horrendous .... They were very short of staff - several not turning up - (I
think there was something on the telly the night before which made people
ill :-)))) .... Anyway - the meagre staff had just had to cope with a rush
prior to us turning up, and the place looked as if a bomb had hit it ....

"Can you please wait ten minutes while we tidy up?" says the manager ....
Okay," says we, "we'll go and have a drink." .... We headed for the bar &
were met with a bar-top with what looked like hundreds of dirty glasses all
piled up on top .... We managed to collar a young man and ordered three cold
drinks ....

We didn't have to wait too long before we were shown to a table and given a
menu .... MIL & I ordered halibut, Andy haddock - I ordered garden peas,
Andy & his Mother had mushy .... When the latter came I was so very glad I'd
ordered the garden ones - the mushy ones were so pale you wondered what on
earth they were sat in their pot ... Andy said they tasted burnt too ....
The bread & butter - 3 slices of brown, 3 of white - were of the "doughy -
slices-stuck-together" sort ... I resisted ...........

The two halibuts were on the small size, but tasted okay & Andy said the
haddock was lovely - and there were loads of nicely cooked chips too ... But
the price was oh so heavy - 8.99 ($14) - peas extra - and so we don't
think we shall be going there again, not in a hurry anyway ...

Seaside fish 'n' chips are always good :-))) .... Best eaten as you walk
along the promenade taking in the sea "air" ....

Hopefully the fish is freshly caught that day - but because of our ever
decreasing fishing industry, you can never be too sure :-( ....
