It might be because men have always had to work, so for white and blue collar
workers at least, their working gear has always had to be practical.
I'd guess that the real change for me came a century earlier, when knee breeches,
stockings, and wigs were still worn.You still see traces of this in livery, and the Uk
Judiciary to this day.
I'm sure that Edward Vll di, (tried to), establish a fashion with trouser creases, but
I'm rather hazy about the details.
