Thank you for your reply. I hadn't realized that the top is a walkway.
Have you ever walked across it? (I don't think I would want to!)

It's a wonder that the Tower Bridge didn't get bombed in WWII.

Hi Susie and all,

Tower Bridge is the first bridge you come to if you are sailing up the
Thames. Its head-room is a mere 28 feet, but when the two bascules (halves
of the roadway) are raised this increases to 140 feet, high enough for
tall-masted ships to pass through.

The bridge was opened in 1894. The two gothic towers house the machinery for
raising the bascules and lifts (elevators) which take pedestrians up to the
high-level walkway across the river. The machinery is electrically operated,
but was originally steam-driven. The towers and their machinery are now open
as a museum.
