There is an distinct difference between a blacksmith and a farrier. The
blacksmith does all manner of ironwork as well as shoeing horses, whereas a
farrier dealt entirely with horses. Apart from shoeing he was the original
horse-doctor and knew all their hurts and ills and moods. Military farriers
were especially skilled in this respect.
