Subject: Counts de Leslie in Russia
Date: Sun, 30 Oct 2005 14:21:16 -0800 (PST)
Hello,
In the 1920s a certain Count Alexander de Leslie
begins to show up in the _New York Times_ and other
records claiming descent variously from a Russian
branch of the Leslies of Balquhain and from "Count
Vergenne de Laval Montmorency Leslay Leslie of France,
who settled in Russia early in the seventeenth
century" [1]. Assuming this is true in general,
although it's obviously wrong or garbled in detail, I
suspect he's a descendant of General Sir Alexander
Leslie of Auchintoul (1590-1663), a Balquhain cadet
who was in the Russian service & left at least three
children in Russia, but I don't know of any source
which might provide the exact descent. Does anyone
have any suggestions? In the mean time, here is a
brief account of "Count" de Leslie's family:
I. Count Pavel Nikolaievich de Leslie, of Paris and
Antibes. Born in Russia, wife born in Spain. d.
before 4 Jan 1950. Father of,
II. Count Aleksander Pavlovich de Leslie, b. ca. 1893
in Russia. Listed on the 1920 Brooklyn Census (E.D.
8, sheet 5B, 60-110) as an artist. m. (1) Florence
R., b. ca. 1893 in Massachusetts. m. (2) 3 Jan 1950,
Central Presbyterian Church, New York City to Lillian,
dau. of Robert MacDougall Campeau of Detroit,
Michigan. Father (by his first wife) of,
III. Countess Olga Aleksandrovna de Leslie, b. ca.
September 1914 in New York. m. 19 September 1939,
Congregational Church, Edgartown, Massachusetts to
William Ross Leigh, son of Thomas Catal Leigh, of New
York.
Sincerely,
Kelsey J. Williams
