Hi all - I am not a subscriber to this list and am hoping you can help?
I have a Spencer lineage traced back to one Thomas Henry Spencer christened December 25,
1798 St Michael's Cathedral Bath, Somerset, England son of Thomas
Spencer and Elizabeth surname not given - therefore it was estimated
Thomas was probably bc1770. There are family legends [and several
indicators to support it] that this family was part of the aristocratic Spencer
family. I have checked the Earls Spencer families and find that
John 1st Earl Spencer and Georgiana Poyntz had children around this time
- but no sign of a Thomas? However, John 1st Earl Spencer died in
Bath 1783?
There are not many Spencer records in the Bath area - so this was
interesting? Thomas Henry Spencer b1798 married Margaret Robinson
daughter of Admiral Robinson who fought under Nelson at Trafalgar - at
which time the 2nd Earl Spencer was First Lord of the Admiralty. It is
believed that to marry an Admiral's daughter in Britain at this
time, one would probably have come from a similar background?
Does anyone have any information that may shed light on this lineage?
Was Thomas a 'blacksheep' of this family and written out, was he an
illegitimate child? Any information would be great. Thanks, Trish
