I concur entirely. A sort of pseudo-history had a vogue a little
while back, rife with Templars, Cathars and Masonic conspiracies, that
threw dust in the eyes of many lay readers and for a time, some
non-specialist historians. Putting any trust at all in the
fantastical genealogies that these characters consatruct to place
themselves atop can corrupt a genealogical database as effectively as
a virus. In fact this sort of farrago is a species of academic virus.
If you check these fellows references they are often to works by
quacks of their own ilk. One hand washes the other, as our German
friends say.
