Here is an interesting clue I'm trying to follow up on; perhaps someone can
pick up on a part of it and provide some illumination:
>Jess's father Lazar Wolk had a brother who became governor general of
>Siberia. >In Russian or Latvian they were called 'Palcovnicks'. He was an
>army officer >who was a Doctor Surgeon under the Czar during the
>Russo-Japanese war. He was >given the position by the Czar for stopping an
>epidemic of malaria. He >renounced his Jewish religion to marry a countess.
Does the name Wolk, or any of the tidbits in this account ring a bell with
anyone? I'm searching on behalf of Jess Walters, formerly Joshua Wolk (a
92-year-old professor of Opera with whom I work at the University, and who
would like to learn about his family before his time is up). The above is
the first and only piece of evidence I have about the family, gotten from
one of his cousins. The Wolks were from Riga, Latvia, originally.
Thanks,
Francesca Sutton
