A bar sinister is an heraldic term for an horizontal bar which leans one way
across the shield, in this case, to the sinister, or left side. It usually
denotes bastardy, and, according to "The Dictionary of Heraldry" is an erroneus
phrase. But as it is in the popular usage, it is not "nonsensical gibberish".
