You will note by the publication dates listed below that Cope wrote his
genealogy well before Ormerod; thus, Cope would not be able to use
Ormerod as a source/reference.
Cope specifically cites the source of his work (i.e., the early Dutton
genealogy) as
"Leycester's Historical Antiquities, published in 1673 by Peter
Leycester, baronet in which the author treats of the history of
Cheshire, England, and more particularly of all the principal families
and estates in that division of the county called Bucklow Hundred." On
page 28, Cope states, "The foregoing account of the Duttons of Dutton,
in Cheshire, England, is taken from "Leycester's Historical
Antiquities," pp. 248-260." (Cope:9-28) Cope's work begins on page 29
with John Dutton of Pennsylvania, the Quaker.
Now, I have also read Ormerod and see almost the exact same words (there
are differences). Thus, it occurs to me that Ormerod also used
Leycester's account; however, Ormerod preserved the references OR cited
his own references. Cope reported, "the author's many references to
other authorities have been omitted." I wish he did not do that!!!
This has resulted in my current search for references!!!!! However,
Ormerod's references are antiquated, anyway, as noted by others in this
NG.
I have re-documented the Dutton line from the ninth generation to the
last generation in the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records (DKR) and
found that the "line of descent" is accurate for the Duttons of Dutton
and the Duttons of Hatton and Dutton starting with Hugh (IX) who married
Joan.
I am still learning medieval genealogy and do not know how to find the
earlier generations--maybe sometime before I die!! ;))
As for Cope's footnotes regarding these early generations, it is
difficult to tell if Cope is writing them or if he is still presenting
Leycester's work. I think that he is still quoting Leycester's work
unless he gives a specific reference, e.g., "Burke's Landed Gentry, p.
1508."
Concerning primary evidence, Odard's Continental Connections remain a
mystery and the only clues that I know of are Leycester's account, "the
ancient roll of the Barons of Halton," the the Visitations, and the
Monasticon Anglicanum.
