How the father of Francis Willoughby was 'dissociated' from the Willoughby
family of Parham is mentioned by Gary Boyd Roberts in NEHGR 141(1987):108,
which makes reference to TAG 56(1980):12-13. But if Francis's father William
was a Commissioner of the Navy, it would seem there ought to be enough evidence
someplace to fit him properly into one of the branches. There are still many
Admiralty records that are unindexed or calendared. God knows if all this
material will be revealed in our lifetimes.

Where to start looking? The Willoughby families in Dorset, Devon, Wiltshire
and Hampshire might make the most sense for a seafaring family (Francis himself
had a ship named the Adventure built for himself in New England). The name
William did at least occur in the Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire Willoughby
families.
