Definitely not. Hugues Capet was given a nickname "Capa/Cape"
and it stuck, like Plantagenet, attached much later to his descendants. I
believe there was one person to whom the name
von Wittelsbach was attached but he belonged to the House of the Dukes of
Bavaria, and again, later on people gave that name to his descendants. They
were definitely not 'surnames' as we know them.
