I ran over to the University Library today, and got conflicting
answers depending on who you look at.
ES gives Juan I two wives, Marthe d'Armagnac, married 1372, died 1380,
whom he gives as the mother of both Juana, wife of Matthieu de Foix,
and of Yolanta, whom he has being born in 1380. He then has Juan I
re-marrying to Yolande de Bar in 1384. It sounds like Jouda, whom I
was following, has just copied ES.
On the other hand, I found another item "Gnalogie des Sourverains
Chrtiens d'Espagne jusqu'aux Bourbons" by D. Labarre de Raillicourt.
He gives Juan THREE wives, the first being Jeanne de Valois, d. of
Philippe VI of France and Blanca of Navarre, with Marthe d'Armagnac
and Yolande de Bar as second and third wives, respectively.
This author says Marthe was married 6 May 1372, and died at Saragossa
23 Oct 1378 (as opposed to ES' 1380), and agrees with ES that she was
the mother of Juana.
L de R. has Yolande de Bar married at Montpellier on 2 Feb 1380 (as
opposed to ES' 1384), and as being the mother of Yolanta (gives no
birth date), Fernando, d. 1389, a son, d. young and another Juana, d.
1396.
So far I think John and Ed are right, and the second version makes
more sense of the inheritance of Bar. Presumably ES made a mistake,
and Louda just copied ES.
On the other hand, L de R says Jeanne de Valois "morte Bziers le 14
septembre 1371 [ES says 16 Sep], pouse peu auparavant, ge de 20
ans.", and yet gives her and Juan four children, Juana, Juan, Alfonso
and Leonor, all died young. If she was married shortly before she
died, how did she have time to have four children? Quadruplets? This
makes me wonder how accurate Labarre de Raillicourt is.
Can anyone clarify this?
