A local SCHARF family in Ottawa is descended from an Irish
Palatine-German, James born c.1764/65 and his wife Ann
who farmed at Coolcullen, County Carlow until they came
here to the Ottawa area with their family about 1820. The
Palatines had emigrated from Germany in 1709-1710 to
England, and some were sent to Ireland a little later. They
adopted the Irish pronunciation of their surname as SKARF.
