Subject: Bastards of Emperor Maximilian I

One very good source, Dr. A.W.E.Dek, list the following illegitimate
children of Emperor Maximilian I :
1.Margaretha, married Franz Baron von Hille
according to Schwennicke
This Margaretha was born ca.1480 and died June 1537 in Liege
married (1) ca.1497 Johann von Hille
(2) Ludwig Count von Helfenstein
who was murdered 16 April 1525 at Weinsperg
2.Martha who married the same Ludwig Count von Helfenstein
here is added that he was murdered by farmers during an
uprising by the local farmers.
Schwennicke does not give this one, and as he makes Martha's
husband the second husband of Margaretha, I would be tempted
to assume that there is no Martha.
3.with a question mark : Barbara von Rothal, baroness von Thalberg,
on 23 July 1515 in Vienna, she married Sigismund von Dietrichstein,
son of Pancraz and Barbara Goszl von Thurn. Sigismund is born in
1484 and died 20 May 1533 in Castle Finkenstein. In 1525, "with
iron fist" he subdued the farmers uprising in Steiermark.
Schwennicke calls her Barbara von Rottal, and instead of questing
records she was legitimised, born circaq 1500 died 31 March 1550 in Vienna.
Schwennicke makes Sigismund her first husband as she marries again,
(2) circa 1535 Ulrich von Czettritz who died 1543
(3) circa 1544 Balthasar von Schweinitz
4.Georg, no surname given. born in Gent in 1505, died in Luik/Liege
4 May 1557. In October 1525 he became bishop of Brixen, on 29 November 1538
Archbishop of Valencia, and bishop of Luik on 24 June 1544.
Bishop or not, he has two bastards himself.
Schwennicke gives as surname : Piret, later von Osterreich. And instead
of fathering two children, there are three: Margaretha, an Abbess;
George and Maria.
5.Elisabeth, died after 24 November 1581, but before 1584.
married late in 1531 Ludwig III von der Mark
Schwennicke gives the same.
6.Cornelius, in 1525 studied in Italy and in 1527 received an
annuity from Ferdinand I
Schwennicke basically the same
7. (Frederik) Maximilian von Amberg, born 1511, died 21 April 1553
in Milan. He married Elisabeth von Oettingen, a widow, and they
had no children.
Schwennicke gives the year 1534 when they married
8.Christoffel Ferdinand, in 1522 mentioned as a student
Schwennicke calls him Christoph Ferdinand, mentioned in 1522
9.Leopold born 1515, bishop of Cordoba 1541-1557, no year given
when he died.
Schwennicke basically the same
10.Anna, born circa 1517, was 1531-1532 lady-in-waiting to Queen
Maria of Hungary. She married Frans de Melun
Schwennicke calls her Anna (Margaretha), and for the rest
basically the same
11.Dorothea, lady in waiting to Maria of Hungary, also 1531-1532.
in 1539 she married Johann, Count von Ostfriesland
Schwennicke gives born 1516 died 1572 and for the rest the same.
Here Dr. Dek stops, but Schwennicke also gives
12.Anna, born circa 1517 and married Louis d'Hirlemont
13.Barbara, probably married to Wolfgang Plaiss
The book by Dr. Dek was published in 1969, and Schwennicke's
volume (III teilband 2) in 1983.
Now I found a bastard neither have mentioned:
Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels, Grafliche Hauser, published in 1997,
page 219 :
Guielma, naturliche tochter d.Kaisers Maximilian I, married Rudiger (Rieger)
von Westernach. She must have been an early child, as her daughter,
Margarita von Westernach was dead in 1558 after having married Georg Heuss von
Khuenburg (he died 1569/70) and produced children. (progeny to the
present day).
Does anyone have a proper list of illegitimate children and does
Guielma belong amongst them? Look forward to replies.
