Subject: I'm building a web site on Medieval weapons
Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 00:03:14 -0800
Hey gang I just started working on a web page that will be an
online encyclopedia of medieval weapons and the like. If this
kind of thing interest you take a look at that I have so far.
http://members.xoom.com/VonDan/armory/armory.htm
What's there now is just the basics and the organization of
weapon types may change depending on the amount of information I
gather. Any comments you might have would be appreciated. Most
of the images are from on-line catalogs and the text is from many
sources both on line and in print. I will be scanning in more
images from some book and catalogs next time I have use of a
scanner. I'm trying to choose images that are representative of
historical types and not fantasy creations
Here are three examples of entries I need further research on
Ashiguers: Japanese foot soldiers. I'm looking for the name of
the sword used by Ashiguers. I know it was basically a Kitana of
a lesser quality but there was another name for them.
Gallowglas: The Scottish and Irish axe men. Which was the most
common pole arm used by the Gallowglas the Sparth axe of the
Lochaber Axe
Dopple Sodat? (german for Double Soldiers meaning both big guys
who got double pay): The german mercenaries with the giant
swords. One catalog says that their weapon was the flamberg with
a wavy blade. But I remember that it was another sword just as
big but not necessarily with a wavy blade. The name might be
Landsknecht although one source gave that as the name of a german
sword similar in form to a basket hilt broad sword carried by the
Landsknecht pikemen
If any one knows of a good source of information on-line I would
appreciate a pointer to there web address. I have already
searched about ten weapon makers catalogs, but some of their
information is suspect.
I do not know every thing about this subject my self and that is why i
chose it. I will learn more about the subject as I teach myself about
build ing web sites
