There is an invaluable publication by Anthony J Camp called "My Ancestors
Came With The Conqueror" This only costs uk pounds 4.35 (overseas surface
pounds 4.60) from the UK "Society of Genealogists".
This book compares names appearing from eight different sources. These all
seem to have their original source as the Battle Abbey Roll, which,
destroyed in 1793, is thought to have dated from 14th century. Mallet is
one of the few names for which there is substantial evidence that he was
also at the battle of Hastings.
Briefly the sources are:
1) Battle Abbey Roll published by Raphael Holinshed in 1577
2) Battle Abbey Roll ascribed to John Brompton c1436
3) Battle Abbey Roll published by Andre Duchesne in 1619
4) Battle Abbey Roll as given by Robert Wace, published 1837
5) Battle Abbey Roll copied before 1550 by John Hearne
6) Battle Abbey Roll by Guillaume le Tailwur in 1487
7) The Falais Roll per bronze tablet at Chapel of the Chateau of William
the Conqueror at Falaise, Normandy 1931 "Further details of these persons,
again inextricably mixing fact with fiction, are to be found in "Falaise
Roll; recording Prominent Companions of William, Duke of Normandy, at the
Conquest of England" by M. Jackson Crispen and Leonce Macary
8) The Dives Roll of Leopold Delisle compiled 1866 and inscribed on marble
memorial at Dives church, where William prayed before embarkation.
Malet appears as follows
1 and 2 and 5, Malet
No ref in 3.
4 and 6, Guillame Mallet
7 Durand Malet; Gilbert Malet; Robert Malet; Guillaume Malet de Graville
8 Durand Malet; Gilbert Malet, Guillaume Malet; Robert Malet
Then:
Durandus Malet 1086 TC
Robertus Malet 1086 TC/ST
Gislebertus de Malet 1086 ST
Cleveland II 261-264
Loyd 56
TC and ST are Tenants in Chief and Sub-Tenants appearing in Domesday Book
Cleveland and Loyd are a referance to "The Battle Abbey Roll; with some
Account of the Norman Lineages" (1889) by Duchess of Cleveland and "The
Origins of some Anglo-Norman Families" by Lewis C Loyd (1951).
Then
"William Malet, mentioned by William of Poitiers and Orderic, was
undoubtedly at the Battle. His parentage is doubtful. His son Robert
Malet, who was Master Chamberlain under Henry I, was deprived of his
estates and banished in or before 1106.
