Actually, he was the son of Edmund "Crouchback", the son of Henrty III. And
I am his descendant too, although I'm not in any society such as you
mentioned. Again, as I mentioned in an earlier post re: descending from
Athelred the Unready (or Alfred, Cerdic, etc) any one who descends from any
offshoot of the British royal family can probably claim ancestors at least
back to Cerdic (d 534) the 1st King of Wessex & considered the first
definite historical figure of that particular line stretching back into the
mythological Woden & beyond.

But, when my e-mail signature used to be "Son of Plantagenet" I got a rather
acerbic comment in a private e-mail exchange with one of the regulars on
this list; he apparently didn't like my claiming to be a scion of a line
gone (by that name) for 500 years.

Oh well.

I've seen estimates that 20% of today's English populace are descended from
Edward III, so maybe I'm missing the point, but why is this thread
generating such interest? There are many descendants of the Plantagenets,
most of us just "normal" folks now despite our bloodlines. Again, I've seen
an estimate out on the web that there are 100 million descendants of
Charlemagne today. So, again, the question is not "if?" but "how?" are you
descended from our illustrious ancestors.
