Subject: SCOTLAND,1577 Testament/Will of Menteith
Date: Tue, 1 Apr 1997 14:14:56 GMT

I am looking for the details of 2 testaments that are
supposed to be in Edinburg, Scotland, according to
"Register of testaments commissionaried of Edinburg, 1514-1600"

21-MAY-1577
27-SEP-1580

both are about MENTEITH

What I would like to do is to complete my family tree.

We have this:

Robert MENTEITH of Kerse and Alva, infeoded 05-DEC-1547 (succeeding
his nephew William MENTEITH who had only daughters).
Father of John, William and Patrick. Wife unknown.

John, William or Patrick MENTEITH is believed to be the father or
grand-father of John Menteith, born in Stirlingshire, lord of
Argentenay in France and married 18-JUL-1594 to Suzanne Hotman.
The grand-mother of that John is the daughter of the Graham
earl of Montrose.

1st tentative tree of Jean de MONTET a.k.a. John of MENTEITH

+ 4 maybe Robert MENTEITH of Kerse and Alva, birth
| estimated around 1470-1500
|
+ 2 maybe John, William or Patrick MENTEITH, birth
| | estimated around 1500-1540
| |
| + 5 Unknown, maybe dau. of Earl of MONTROSE
|
1- John MENTEITH of the house of Carse (Kerse), birth
| estimated around 1550-1570
|
| + 6 Unknown
| |
+ 3 Unknown
|
+ 7 Unknown, maybe dau. of Earl of MONTROSE

2nd tentative tree of Jean de MONTET a.k.a. John of MENTEITH

+ 8 maybe Robert MENTEITH of Kerse and Alva
|
+ 4 maybe John, William or Patrick MENTEITH
|
+ 2 Unknown, MENTEITH of the house of Kerse and Alva
| |
| + 5 Unknown, maybe dau. of Earl of MONTROSE
|
1- John MENTEITH of the house of Carse (Kerse)
|
| + 6 Unknown
| |
+ 3 Unknown
|
+ 7 Unknown, maybe dau. of Earl of MONTROSE

Sources:
2, 4- based on the fact John (1) is of the House of Kerse
5 or 7- based on the fact John (1) is the grandson of dau.
of Earl of Montrose
(marriage contract of 1594)

Side notes:

>From the *Scots Peerage*, vol. V, p. 608, where there's an Agnes
Erskine married to a William Menteith of Kerse. She could have been a
daughter of Alexander, 3rd Lord Erskine (d. by 1509), but there is no
direct evidence of her parentage.
