Handfasting was an ancient Celtic custom (found not just in Scotland..
actually, more prevelant in Ireland than anywhere else)...and each tribe
seems to have had their own version of this ceremony. However, it was
traditionally performed on Beltainne (May 1) and lasted for a year and a
day. And BTW, the custom has not died...it is still very much alive and
well. :)
