I'm not sure how relevant this is, but Sir Walter Scott's novel, The Bride
of Lammermuir, which takes place in the Lothians just east of Edinburgh,
concerns the rivalry of two Scottish noble families in the late 17th
century, the Ravenswoods and the Ashtons, for the property known as
Lammermuir. Maybe he made it up and some literary Aussies who wanted to
forget their real name copied it ... or maybe the Scots went to Australia.
In Donizetti's opera they lose out -- in fact, they die out.
