Subject: NOBIS or NEPIS surnames, Italy 750>1550
Date: Sun, 4 Aug 1996 19:25:13 -0700

This is being resent as I received a message from my POP server that the
original was undeliverable.

I am looking for assistance or information that might help me to verify the
origin of the surname NOBIS and/or NEPIS.

I have been told by my great-grandmother that the NOBIS name originated from
north central Italy. It is believed that the family was in Assisi, Italy
from 750 up until about 1550 when the family (or some members of the family)
relocated to a village called Malavicina in Mantova, Italy. Prior to the
relocation to Malavicina, it is believed that the name was actually NEPIS.

Family members relocated to southern Germany, Austria and possibly France in
the 1600s and 1700s, probably when this region (Mantova) was under the
control of Austria.

I am looking for suggestions and any help on how verify the origin of the
NOBIS and NEPIS surnames. I am also very interested in verifying if members
of the Italian NOBIS family actually emigrated to Germany, Austria and
France. Or whether the NOBIS name had several independent origins.
