Subject: Peyrotte family in southeast France

I've enjoyed reading this newsgroup for a month or so and am
continually delighted and amazed at the wealth of knowledge possessed
my so many of the subscribers. I hope someone may be able to help with
this problem.

There was (perhaps still is) a family named Peyrotte, of the minor
nobility, in Herault, France. They were lords of Cazilhac, Soubes,
Poujols from at least the 16th to 18th centuries.

The line I have goes back to Henri de Peirottes/Peyrotte, who married
Francoise de Falc in 1626. His heir, Henri married Isabeau de Jaule ca
1660. His heir was another Henri who married Anne de Triboulet ca
1685. This Henri had a brother (among other siblings) named Pierre,
who was called Sieur de Cazilhac.

What happened to this Pierre? I have some information that he may have
joined the Knights of the Hospital. But it doesn't seem likely for him
to do that and be the lord of Cazilhac too. Or, am I wrong? Would
this have been a normal thing in those days?

The records of this part of France seem to indicate that members of the
Knights of the Hospital and other military units were quartered
frequently in the little towns and villages. Were the Knights pretty
much like other military groups by the 18th century, or did they retain
a charitable function? Did the Knights marry and have families or did
they live monkish lives? I've read about them but am still confused.
Did their function change over the years?

Thanks for any help.
