Subject: ? re phrase in early English records

Could someone please explain the meaning of the phrase "presented to the
church" which appears in many English records of the 1300-1400s. Since it
seems to apply to a man later in his life I assume it is not related to a
baptism. Perhaps he made a large gift to the church?

Example: "William Purefoy in 1418 presented to the church of Shalstone."

Thanks for your help.

Alan
