Let me, or rather more correctly, G.E. Cokayne in the COPLETE PEERAGE,
under the TONY listing for ROGER DE TOENI, throw another log on this fire.
In the main text, it is stated that Roger "went away to Spain and
distinguished himself in fighting the infidels" and that "He m., perhaps
2ndly, Godehut, whose parentage is unknown. He d. as above, probably in
1038 or 1039 . . . His widow m. Richard, 3rd count of Evreux."
Then in a footnote, it is stated "Roger, s. of Count Rodolf (see note
"b" above [which states that this Roger is almnost certainly, but not
conclusively, the Roger we are now discussing]),m.,in Spain,Stephanie [or
Etiennette], sister of Raymond Berenger; which lady afterwards m. Garsias,
King of Spain (Rec. des Hist. de France, vol X, p. 223). This agrees with
the statement of Ademar, that he m. a dau. (unnamed) of the widowed
Ermesende, Countess of Barcelona (idem, p. 156), the mother of Raymond
abovenamed. If this Roger were Roger de Toeni, he m. Godehut while his 1st
wife was alive, and Stephanie m. Garcias III, King of Navarre, while Roger
was living."
Does this help, or merely maddy the waters some more ?
Today is the first day of the rest of your life ! () Jim
