There are many. The problem is, they don't always agree (see my recent post
to Tom Bjornstad Re: more on Ethelbald/Ethelbert/Ethelred (11/29/95).

You can't really rely on just one work. As a bare minimum (and I'll
probably get lots of flack on this <G>), you should have Bede's "The
Ecclesiiastical History of the English Nation," Geoffrey of Monmouth's
"The History of the Kings of Britain," and Christopher Brooke's "The Saxon
and Norman Kings." Beyond that, it depends on where your interest takes
you. I am partial to Scotland in the time of the Celts, since that's where
my tree led me.

By the way, there has been _considerable_ advancement since Dickens' time.
