William Gayer of Nantucket (17th century) was supposed to have a descent
from Edward I through the Courtenays due to a misidentification of his
brother Sir John Gayer with another John Gayer pedigreed a Devonshire
visitation. The genealogy of the English Gayer family, _Gayre's Booke_,
is the source of the disproof. Sorry but I don't have details handy as
all of my ms. are packed for a move. I had to throw out an entire
notebook of spurious ancestors on after finding that error.
